How to convert a dict to a list, preserving the keys?
I have a dict like this:
import collections
from collections import defaultdict
dictd = defaultdict(list)
dictd[‘a’].append(‘b’)
dictd[‘a’].append(‘c’)
I tried this, expecting this output:
[‘a’, [‘b’, ‘c’]]
But got:
[(‘a’, [‘b’, ‘c’])]
How can I go from the first example to the second?
A:
In fact, here you don’t need any special tools. Your defaultdict is a dictionary (called dict, to be precise) itself, with ‘a’ as the keys and the list as the values. So the correct answer is:
dictd[‘a’]
If you want to make it a list, just use the list constructor.
A:
As you’ve requested, here’s a generic function that works with any mutable-like dictionary, mapping the key to a new list:
from collections import defaultdict
def mapdict(mapping):
result = []
for key, value in mapping.items():
if value is not None:
result.append(value)
return result
mapdict({‘a’: [‘b’, ‘c’]})
# [‘a’, [‘b’, ‘c’]]
